NEM Rakyat: Saving Money with Solar

NEM Rakyat: Saving Money with Solar
More Malaysians are turning to the NEM Rakyat program to generate solar power and earn 1-to-1 credit for excess energy sent back to the grid. The results – Lower bills, long-term savings, and a greener lifestyle.

If you’re a Malaysian homeowner, you’ve probably noticed your electricity bills creeping up—and with tariff hikes looming, it’s only going to get worse. But there’s a smarter way to fight back: NEM Rakyat.

What Is NEM Rakyat?

Launched in 2016, Net Energy Metering (NEM) Rakyat is a government-backed program designed to help Malaysians adopt solar energy and reduce their dependence on the grid. Here’s how it works:

  • You use what you generate – Solar energy produced by your PV system powers your home during the day.

  • You export the extra – Any excess electricity goes back to the grid.

  • You earn credit – TNB credits the exported electricity 1-to-1, offsetting future energy use.

How NEM Rakyat Works in 5 Simple Steps:

  • Solar Installation
Solar panels are installed on your roof, turning sunlight into electricity.

  • Use What You Generate
Your home uses the solar electricity during the day.

  • Export the Excess
Extra energy not used is exported to TNB’s grid.

  • Offset Future Usage
For every kWh you export, you offset one kWh imported from the grid—lowering your bill.

  • Save Monthly
You pay only for what you net use, drastically reducing your monthly electricity bill.

Real-Life Example: How Michelle Saves Monthly

Michelle installed a solar PV system for her home. Before going solar, her average monthly electricity bill was RM582.

Here’s what happened in one month after the installation:

  • Her solar PV system generated 1,000 kWh during the day

  • Her home used 600 kWh directly from the solar system

  • The excess 400 kWh was exported to the TNB grid

  • At night, she imported 600 kWh from the grid

Thanks to the 1-to-1 offset under NEM Rakyat, the 400 kWh she exported was deducted from her 600 kWh night-time usage. That means she only pays for 200 kWh.

Her new bill? Just RM97
Total monthly savings: 84%

With solar, Michelle slashed her electricity bill—and you can too!
