Lighting Rural Malaysia: Solar Street Lights
In many rural parts of Malaysia, access to reliable electricity remains a challenge. Yet, a simple innovation can make a powerful difference—bringing safety, opportunity, and renewed vitality to communities after dark.
Solartech recently contributed its expertise in energy-efficient lighting to support the Orang Asli community of Kampung Orang Asli Batu 12, Gombak. This meaningful initiative, led by Asiaworks Malaysia has helped illuminate a village of over 1,000 residents from the Temiar, Semai, and Jakun communities.
The project involved the installation of solar street lights along the access road surrounding the village. Careful planning was essential, as each lighting pole had to be strategically positioned to ensure optimal sunlight exposure for the solar panels—maximising performance and reliability.
With access to solar street lights, villagers can now move about more safely and make better use of communal spaces for work, gatherings, and social activities after sunset. Well-lit roads and pathways significantly enhance daily life, especially for women and children commuting to school, workers returning home after dark, and elderly residents navigating uneven or forest-adjacent paths.
These cost-effective solar street lights are equipped with high-lumen LED chips and durable, weather-resistant IP66-rated materials. Designed to operate for up to 12 hours nightly, they offer a lifespan of up to 50,000 hours with minimal maintenance—making them a practical and sustainable solution for rural communities.
Beyond safety and convenience, the solar street lights also reduce reliance on single-cell battery torchlights and traditional lighting sources such as kerosene lamps and candles, which can emit harmful air pollutants and pose fire risks.
This journey of bringing light to underserved communities through Solartech solutions demonstrates the transformative power of renewable energy—improving quality of life while building a safer, more sustainable future for all.
