What is Solar ATAP?

The Solar Accelerated Transition Action Programme (Solar ATAP) is a new government initiative designed to help more Malaysians make better use of their rooftops to generate solar energy.

Solar ATAP allows homeowners and businesses to use solar energy for their own needs and export excess electricity to the grid for bill credits. The programme also offers greater flexibility, allowing solar systems to be sized up to 100% of a customer’s maximum electricity demand (or up to 1MW), helping users maximise their solar savings.

When Is Solar ATAP Starting?

Solar ATAP started on 1st January 2026.

Solar ATAP is open to all registered consumers of Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB)

Any consumer registered under tenant sub meters in the multi-tenant scheme, is not eligible to apply for Solar ATAP programme.

For Domestic Consumer (Home)  :

  • Single phase: up to 5 kW
  • Three phase: up to 15 kW

(Connection Confirmation Check (CCC) is required if system size exceeds the limits above)

For Non-Domestic Consumer (Business):

Up to 100% of Maximum Demand subject to technical assessment with cap at 1 MW

(Connection Assessment Study (CAS) is required if system size exceeds 72kW)

For Domestic Consumer (Home)

>5kW (1 phase)

>15kW (3 phase)

Connection Confirmation Check (CCC) is required

For Domestic Group (Homes)

 > 72kW

Connection Assessment Study (CAS) is required

For Non-Domestic Consumer (Business)

>72kW

Connection Assessment Study (CAS) is required

>425kW (Medium Voltage)

Connection Assessment Study (CAS) and Fault Current Analysis is required

>425kW (High Voltage)

Power System Study (PSS) is required

10 years. After ten (10) years period, the energy generated from the solar PV is for self-consumption only.

Self-consumption or known as SELCO applies when electricity is being generated for own usage and no offset is allowed for excess exported to the grid.

Exported energy is converted into energy credits and deducted from the monthly electricity bill.

For Domestic Consumer (Home) : Credited at Energy Charge

For Non-Domestic Consumer (Business) : Credited at Average System Marginal Price (SMP)

Any unused credits cannot be carried forward to the next month.
